Certified Payroll & Whole Payroll Process
I have been doing payroll for a civil construction company based in California for nearly a decade now and my entire life used to revolve around getting our guys paid and making sure we were compliant. I LOVE Hammr because I finally I got my nights and weekends back and I took my longest vacation in 8 years with my family, so it has been a HUGE personal win for me!! We tried different payroll providers and and time tracking systems in the past and none of them were ever a true "one stop shop" for us, a lot of the other ones we tried were a nightmare actually. Before Hammr, I was calculating all rates, fringes, allowable fringe deductions and expirations using an excel spreadsheet. I was even using a spreadsheet to track PTO balances because I didn't trust Intuit to do it accurately. All our certified payrolls and prevailing wage projects were all handled manually, which was a nightmare for us. Hammr is the first company that actually gets these things right. We can use multiple prevailing wage classifications, multiple worker's comp codes, and all of them are accurate for our payroll. Certified payroll, for one project, for one week, used to take me about 2.5 hours and now it takes about 30 seconds inside Hammr! One of my other big wins was when our GC requested 6 weeks of certified payroll reports for a project I was backlogged on, and I completed it within minutes. We got a hand delivered check the next morning! That normally would have derailed my entire week and meant hours of overtime for me. I can't begin to tell you how happy that made me AND our owner. The mobile app is also great, our guys range from super tech savvy to "I barely got a smartphone this year" and they can all use it. They can see their PTO, sick balances, and paystubs right in the app, so they're not coming to me asking at 4PM on a Sunday. Onboarding has also been a dream. I was doing things so archaically in the past but the onboarding is totally customizable and allows us to enter new employees and get them on our jobsites quickly. Gone are the days of them driving to the office, physical papers, handwriting things and scanning documents manually. It has made my life so much easier and it's a WIN WIN for me in the office and for our field guys.
Hammr Makes NYS Certified Payroll Fast, Easy, and Worth the Price
Hammr makes the notoriously difficult certified payroll process significantly simpler. As a small business, they have saved us a ton of time by helping us automate (as much as possible) our certified payroll process.
More than payroll - a flexible workforce platform
For us, the problem is less about simply running payroll and more about connecting workforce data to the rest of the company. Especially since we’re signatory to many unions and have a lot of data that needs to be connected and reported on. We want project, labor, and payroll information to be usable in our own reporting and operational systems. Hammr’s API has given us much more flexibility there, and it has allowed me to build internal tooling around our actual workflow instead of forcing everything into one vendor’s interface. The Sage Intacct migration is another example. Having Hammr involved early has helped us think through how labor and payroll data should move into the new accounting system rather than treating that as an afterthought.
Much better fit for running our field workforce
We wanted one system that could connect the field side of the business with payroll and compliance. Scheduling is a big part of that. We need to assign employees to the right jobs and work orders, track that work at the right level, and then have that information carry through into payroll, prevailing wage, and certified payroll. Hammr also supports the Davis-Bacon and prevailing wage requirements we deal with in Alaska, including classifications and fringe calculations. That saves us from having to piece together separate systems or spreadsheets.

Hammr has simplified a lot of the complexity that comes with construction payroll. From prevailing wage and multiple jobsites to per diem, reimbursements, deductions, and compliance, we’re spending less time fighting the system and more time actually managing payroll. Their team is also extremely responsive and willing to adapt to how we operate, which has been a huge benefit.

We needed a payroll system that could better support a construction company doing more prevailing wage work. Certified payroll reporting was becoming increasingly important for us, and we didn’t want to keep adding manual processes as that side of the business grew. Hammr has been such a blessing in this regard because even though I am still the person who runs payroll; I can run payroll in 20 minutes while sitting at the airport. For the company, Hammr has solved so many of our challenges that piled up surrounding payroll. Keeping our prevailing wage rates and fringes accurate, in compliance and automatically calculated is something I didn't think was possible with a payroll company. Before Hammr, I was calculating all rates, fringes, allowable fringe deductions and expirations using an excel spreadsheet. I was even using a spreadsheet to track PTO balances because I didn't trust Intuit to do it accurately. Hammr has completely changed that, I no longer have to devote my bandwidth to thinking about those things. A quick accuracy check once in a while and you start to build that trust with the software and know that your information is being handled and reported correctly. It truly is an amazing feeling. As far as the benefits, it is the long hours it has saved me and it is also that I'm not dreading emails from our GCs anymore or letting one busy week turn into a pile that I can't even get to. I used to cancel vacations because I had so much anxiety around our payroll. Four months into using Hammr I took my longest vacation in 8 years with my family because I knew I could log on for a few minutes and be totally fine. That's a really big deal for me and Iʼm really happy that it has worked out so well for us. It has made my life easier with payroll and also I love that it makes our field guys jobs easier also.
